Indicative figures for planning. Transit is port to port and excludes collection, customs and delivery. The rates above are starting prices for the freight only, each shown with the unit it is charged in — they are not shipment totals. What you actually pay depends on your volume or weight, the exact route, and any customs, collection and delivery. Anything marked on request is a service we have not recorded on this lane — that is not the same as there being none, so ask and we will confirm what is arrangeable.

Port options from Italy to the UK

Every pair below is bookable. The gateway that suits you is usually the one nearest your cargo rather than the one nearest the other end — on most lanes the inland leg is where the avoidable cost sits.

Rates on this lane are quoted per shipment rather than published, because they move with space, fuel and the commodity. Send us the route and we will come back with a firm all-in figure. Transit marked port average is the indicative range for that port rather than a figure specific to the pair. FCL ✓ means full container load is confirmed on that pair; LCL ? means we have no groupage service recorded for it yet — ask us, because one may still be arrangeable.

Can you ship FCL and LCL from Italy to the UK?

Example service map. The FCL and LCL availability shown on this page is illustrative while the real lane list is being loaded. Confirm with us before booking.

Full container load from Italy depends on us having an agent handling the origin end, which is arranged per lane rather than standing. Tell us the supplier's location and we will confirm before you commit to anything.

Groupage (LCL) is on request on this lane. Shared-container services need a consolidator filling a box at one end and stripping it at the other, so they run on specific ports rather than everywhere. We have no service recorded here yet — that is not the same as there being none, so ask and we will check what is arrangeable for your volume.

Not sure which you need? Full container load is normally cheaper above roughly 15 cubic metres, groupage below it — see FCL and LCL for how each is priced.

What happens at customs when you import from Italy?

The export formalities at the Italy end are your supplier's responsibility under most Incoterms, and our origin agent handles the booking and loading. What lands on you is the British side.

You need a GB EORI number to import commercially — an Economic Operator Registration and Identification number, which is simply the reference customs uses to identify your business. Registration is free through HMRC and usually issued within a few working days, but cargo cannot clear without one. Import VAT is charged at 20% on the customs value plus duty plus freight, and duty itself is set by the UK Global Tariff against the commodity code of the goods.

Most importers should be using postponed VAT accounting, which puts the import VAT on your VAT return rather than making you pay it in cash at the border and reclaim it later. It costs nothing, applies automatically once you elect it on the entry, and on regular volumes it is the difference between a manageable cash cycle and an ugly one. We elect it on your behalf unless you tell us otherwise.

Documents you need

Commercial invoice from your supplier, showing the commodity code, value, currency and Incoterm
Packing list with piece count, dimensions and gross weight
Bill of lading or, where the goods travel by air, the air waybill
Your GB EORI number — cargo cannot clear into the UK without one
Preference certificate or statement on origin, where a trade agreement gives a reduced duty rate
Any licence or certificate the commodity needs, which we confirm before the goods load

We prepare and file all of these. Where a document belongs to your supplier, we tell you which one and when it is needed — before the goods load, not after.

How it works

Shipping from Italy to the UK, step by step

1

Quote and book

Send us your supplier's address in Italy, the delivery postcode in Britain and the cargo details. We quote the whole movement, not the sea leg alone.

2

Origin collection

Our agent in Italy collects from your supplier, handles the local export formalities and loads the container.

3

UK import entry

We file the customs entry against your GB EORI on arrival at London Gateway, elect postponed VAT accounting and settle any duty due.

4

Delivery

We deliver to your address anywhere in the UK once the entry is cleared — tail lift, timed and restricted-access deliveries arranged where needed.

Shipping from Italy to the UK: common questions

How long does shipping from Italy to the UK take?

Sea transit runs 8–12 days port to port depending on the gateway and the service. Add roughly a week either side for collection, customs and delivery to get a realistic door-to-door figure. Groupage adds a further five to eleven days because the container has to be filled at one end and stripped at the other.

Which UK port will my container arrive at?

Whichever gateway gives the shortest inland leg to your delivery address, subject to the carrier's service. London Gateway is the usual arrival port on Europe services, and we will tell you if a different one lands your cargo closer.

What does it cost to ship a container from Italy to the UK?

It depends on the container size, the port pair and the sailing, so we price each shipment rather than publishing a single rate. Send us the route and the cargo and we will come back with an all-in landed figure — freight, clearance, duty and delivery — rather than an ocean rate you have to add to later.

What is a GB EORI and do I need one to import?

An Economic Operators Registration and Identification number is how HMRC identifies you on a customs entry, and you cannot import commercially without one. It is free, applied for online, and normally issued within a few working days. Cargo arriving for an importer with no EORI sits at the port accruing storage until one is obtained.

Can I defer the import VAT rather than paying it at the border?

Yes, through postponed VAT accounting. It puts the import VAT on your VAT return instead of requiring cash at the border and a reclaim afterwards, it is available to every VAT-registered business, and it costs nothing to use. We elect it on the entry unless you tell us not to.

What Incoterm should I ask my Italy supplier for?

FOB is usually the sensible default for a container: your supplier delivers the goods loaded at their port and you control the sea leg, the carrier and the cost from there. Buying on CIF hands that control to the supplier's forwarder, and the destination charges you then face at the British end are set by someone you have no relationship with.
